Expanded and Improved Greek and Latin Tools

We are continuing to expand and improve the tools for studying Greek and Latin. In the past few months, we have mined the data in Liddell and Scott's Intermediate Greek Lexicon and Lewis' Elementary Latin Dictionary for a short definition of each word in these dictionaries. These short definitions now appear on the morphological analysis screen providing rough definitions for users who do not want to follow a second link to the larger lexicon entries.
We have also developed an overview of Greek syntax. The overview currently contains a short description of the elements of Greek Syntax that most students will encounter in first and second year Greek. Each section contains an example that is linked to the texts in the Perseus Digital Library and a link to a more complete discussion in Smyth's Greek Grammar. This overview is also integrated to the morphological analysis tool in Perseus. When a user analyzes a word, they can follow now follow links from the analysis to the overview.
We also have several exciting projects in progress. We are currently preparing sections from Kühner-Gerth's Ausführliche Grammatik der griechischen Sprache and Goodwin's Syntax of Greek Moods and Tenses for the Perseus web site. After these works have been edited, we will also include links to them in the overview of Greek syntax. Finally, we are beginning to enter commentaries on the Greek texts in Perseus. Forthcoming titles include Leaf's commentary on the Iliad, Jebb's commentaries on Sophocles, Adams' commentaries on selected works of Lysias, and many others. These commentaries will appear throughout 1999 and they will be announced on the Perseus web site.
