Announcing a New Look for Perseus Texts

17 March 2000

We've upgraded the text display facilities in Perseus! Here are some of the new features:

  • Display configuration options -- like your favorite Greek font -- can be saved between sessions.
  • Visual navigation tools make it easy to move around in a text.
  • Texts that mention places are automatically linked to the Perseus Atlas.
  • References from other texts to the one you are reading are automatically displayed.

The new text system will also make it easier for us to add new texts. Look for additional Greek and Latin texts, translations, and commentaries coming to Perseus during 2000.

See the help page for more information, or see the full list of available texts

The Power of the Digital Library

Texts, images, and maps in the Perseus Digital Library are all interconnected, making it easy for readers to look up Sophocles, Catullus, Pompeii, or Eleusis using a single powerful Lookup Tool. The technology that makes this possible is structured text markup. Perseus texts are not written as HTML web pages, but instead are written in a structured language that allows text editors and the system itself to identify references to other texts, places, people, and art works.

For more details on structured text markup, see the Introduction and Guidelines at the Stoa Consortium, and look for the Perseus White Papers series, to be inaugurated later this year.
