A.that which is thrown away in cleansing: in pl., offscourings, refuse of a sacrifice, A.Ch.98; residuum of ore after smelting, slag, Str.3.28: sg.,= “κάθαρσις11, Hp.Epid. 5.2.
II. in pl.,= κάθαρσις, purification, E.IT1316; ποντίων καθαρμάτων . . ἀμοιβάς in return for clearing the sea (of pirates), Id.HF225.
III. ἐντὸς τοῦ καθάρματος within the purified ground where the assembly was held, Ar.Ach.44.
