Instructions for installing Perseus 2.0 on an external hard drive

(FULL INSTALLATION of comprehensive edition)

This is the easiest method for fully installing Perseus 2.0 on an external hard drive. There are other methods you or your systems administrator may choose. This is the one we recommend to those who are uncomfortable changing the HyperCard search paths.

Please note that you should contact Yale University Press about purchasing a site or multiple user license if you wish to run Perseus 2.0 on a network.

  1. Step One: Partition your external hard drive.

First, you need a hard drive with at least 1.7 gigabytes of memory. You may use a drive with more than 1.7 gig, but not less. 1.7 gig is the minimum we recommend.

You should begin by partitioning the hard drive. Various manufacturers include partitioning software with their hard drives. You may use any second party software to partition that came with your drive or any software with which you are comfortable.

Please be aware that some partitioning software measures partitions in Mb (megabytes) and some measures in Kb (kilobytes). This is an important distinction! Know what you are working with.

You will need four partitions for the Perseus data files. You may divide your disk into more than four partitions, and use the extra partitions for other data, but you need at least four partitions dedicated to Perseus. You should name and size the partitions as follows:

Partition Name Minimum Size in Kb Minimum Size in Mb
    Perseus Disk 1 663,552 Kb 648 Mb
    Perseus Disk 2 333,824 Kb 326 Mb
    Perseus Disk 3 356,966.4 Kb 348.6 Mb
    Perseus Disk 4 356,761.6 Kb 348.4 Mb

The names should be identical to the names on the CD-Roms. Do not alter these names in any way! They should have the same number of spaces, identical capitalization, etc. This is an important distinction and the software needs these names in order to find the Perseus files!

Note that the partition sizes have been given in both Kb and Mb. (1024 Kb= 1 Mb). If your partitioning software asks you for Kb (kilobytes), use the numbers in the first column. If your software asks you for Mb (megabytes), use the numbers in the second column. You can always convert megabytes to kilobytes by multiplying them by 1024. (648 x 1024 = 663,552)

Make four partitions with the names and sizes listed above. Any excess memory can and should be partitioned to your preference.

  2. Step Two: Copy the Perseus data files to your partitions.

After you have made the four partitions listed above, you may begin copying the Perseus files to the respective partitions.

    • Copy Perseus Disk 1:
    • Place the Perseus Disk 1 CD into your CD-Rom drive. Copy this entire CD into the corresponding partition (named "Perseus Disk 1").

Do not put these folders into another folder. Do not alter them in any way. Simply drag these folders into the corresponding partition and let them copy. If you change the naming system of these folders or place them in another folder, Perseus will not run properly.

Once Perseus Disk 1 has been completely copied onto the hard drive, remove the CD-Rom.

    • Copy Disks 2, 3 and 4: (These instructions differ from those for Disk 1!)
    • Place Perseus Disk 2 in your CD Rom drive. Note that Perseus Disk 2 contains 53 items. You need only copy the items designated by number-letter combinations. You DO NOT need the folders named Local Stacks, Movies, Perseus Databases, Stacks, and Universal Images 1 through 5. Copy ONLY folders 1987.03.1t through 1994.01.1t into the corresponding partition.

Do not put these folders into other folders. Do not rename them. Do not alter them in any way.

Repeat this step for disks 3 and 4. Copy only the numbered folders into the corresponding partitions. Do not alter, rename, or move these folders; simply copy them into the correct partitions.

Please Note: When copying files from disks 2, 3, and 4, you will not need any folders with names (Local Stacks, Movies, Perseus Databases, Stacks, or Universal Images 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.) These folders already appear in your Perseus Disk 1 partition. They are duplicated for those who are running the comprehensive edition from the CD's and are needed only if you are going to be swapping CD's. They are NOT necessary for a full installation. If you try to copy these files you will not have enough space in your partitions and will get an error message!

  3. Step Three: Copy Local Stacks onto your machine's hard drive.

After the copying has finished (and this will take some time depending on the memory configuration of your computer), remove any CD-Rom from your CD drive. Open the hard disk partition which you named "Perseus Disk 1." There should be a folder there named "Local Stacks." Copy this folder onto the hard drive of your machine. It can be in any folder you prefer. It can be placed on the desktop of your Mac. It can be placed in an applications folder. It does not matter. Drag this folder to some place convenient for you. You will need at least 5.8 Mb of free space for this folder.

To run Perseus, open the Local Stacks folder on your hard drive (DO NOT use the Local Stacks on the Perseus Disk 1 partition! This can lead to the loss of searching, notebook, or paths data.) Double click on the item named Perseus Player to begin using Perseus.

Please consult your user's guide for further operating instructions.

If you find that you are missing folders, recopy them from the CDs. You can erase folders and files from an unlocked hard drive: you CANNOT erase or alter the data on the CD Roms. You should have them available in case of a hardware problem.
