Εἰώθει—sc. αὐτὸ from ὅπερ, cf. c. 4, 5. ὁπόταν— cf. c. 11, 6. τότε—i.e. when the wind threw them into confusion. γίγνεσθαι—might be ἔσεσθαι—‘quod enim fit non est, sed erit.’ Sta. Cf. IV. 24 ἤλπιζον .. χειρώσεσθαι, καὶ ἤδη σφῶν ἰσχυρὰ τὰ πράγματα γίγνεσθαι.
