Plut. 768 φέρε νῦν ἰοῦσ᾽ εἴσω κομίσω καταχύσματα ὥσπερ νεωνήτοισιν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἐγώ). The sweetmeats. nuts, &c. were scattered over the newly-purchased slave and scrambled for by his fellowservants. ‘This was done, not on the slave's account, but for the sake of a good omen, as the Scholiast tells us.’ Becker's Charicles III 33 (=p. 368 of Eng. abridgment).
