σύ γε θαρρῶν: thrown in with emphasis, because what follows in flicts the deepest disgrace, πατάξαι. With πατάξαι the repetition in thought of ἔασόν τινα is the easiest construction. On the common object of the three infs., see on 493 c σοί.

τὴν ἄτιμον ταύτην κτἑ.: says Socrates, with reference to 527 a and 486 c.

23 f.

οὐδὲν γὰρ δεινὸν πείσει: external rough treatment will not affect the real man.

κἄπειτα: refers to ἀσκῶν, but it is more exactly defined by οὕτω . . . ἀσκήσαντες.

τότε ἤδη: emphatic position. The addition ἐὰν δοκῇ χρῆναι indicates that they may then find something more important to do.

ἐπιθησόμεθα κτἑ.: cf. 521 d. This is the answer to Callicles' advice in 484 c ff. On the other hand, ὁποῖον ἄν τι ὑμῖν δοκῇ can serve for Polus. Cf. 466 c ff.

τότε: explained by βελτίους κτἑ.

ὡς . . . ἔχειν: a polite expression which can hardly be misunderstood by those present.
