ἀπὸ σπουδῆς. All MSS. give ὑπὸ, upon which no commentator has remarked. Thucydides has κατὰ σπουδήν, i. 93, ii. 90; μετὰ σπουδῆς and διὰ σπουδῆς are also natural expressions; but there is no parallel to this use of ὑπὸ. Such expressions as ὑπ᾽ ὀργῆς, ὑφ᾽ ἡδονῆς, ὑπὸ δέους are only used where the ὀργή, ἡδονή, δέος is the cause or motive of the action. In c. 35. § 1, all MSS. wrongly give ἀπὸ for ὑπὸ. If the contrary emendation is made here, we get the well-authenticated ἀπὸ σπουδῆς = σπουδῇ or σπουδαίωας = ‘they worked with a will.’ Cf. ἀπὸ τοῦ περιφανοῦς = περιφανῶς (i. 35), ἀπὸ ἀντιπάλου παρασκευῆς (i. 99). Hom. Il. vii. 359, εἰ δ᾽ ἐτεὸν δὴ τοῦτον ἀπὸ σπουδῆς ἀγορεύεις.

οἱ ἐν τῇ Σηστῷ Thucydides has omitted to tell us that they had established themselves there after the battle. It was, however, the natural thing to do.

ἀφεστηκυῖαν i.e. ἣ ἀφεστηκυῖα ἐτύγχανε. Diod. xiii. 40, αὕτη γὰρ πρὸ τῆς ναυμαχίας ἦν ἀφεστηκυῖα πρὸς Φαρνάβαζον καὶ Κλέαρχον.

Ἁρπάγιον called by Strabo (p. 587) Ἁρπαγεῖα, and placed by him ἐν τῇ μεθορίᾳ τῆς Κυζικηνῆς καὶ τῆς Πριαπηνῆς. The name is supposed to refer to the rape of Ganymede. The places are so near together that they are mentioned without regard to order of geographical position.

τὰς . . . ὀκτὼ Cf. c. 80, § 4.

ἀνέπραξαν The compound implies a debt (which is here an indemnity). Cf. ii. 95, ἀναπράσσειν ὑπόσχεσιν; Xen. Anab. vii. 6, 40, μισθὸν ἀναπράττειν.

ἐπὶ τὸν Ἐλαιοῦντα. Again Thucyd. has omitted to say that the captured ships had been deposited there.

τὰς ἐκεῖθεν ναῦς v. c. 95. This fleet was wrecked off Mt. Athos (Diod. xiii. 41). But Hippocrates was saved, as appears from Xen. Hell. i. 1, 23.
