The prosecutor
is so extraordinarily malicious that he gives the credit of any duty
successfully performed not to me but to opportunity, but holds me and my bad
luck responsible for everything that miscarried. I am a speaker and a statesman,
yet it would seem that, in his view, I am to have no credit for the results of
the discussion and deliberation, but am solely responsible for all the
misadventures of our arms and of our generalship. Can you imagine a cruder or
