[1249] μελέη: 'in vain.' In Hom. μέλεος is always used like ἠλεός 'fruitless.' Elsewhere Ap. always uses it in the classical sense of 'wretched,' a meaning which is first found in Hes. Th. 563, μελέοισιθνητοῖς.
