ἀνενείκατο μῦθον: cf. 635, Theocr. 23. 18, “οὕτω δ᾽ ἀνενείκατο φωνήν.” Buttmann shows that the use of this word in the Alex. poets was due to a misunderstanding of Il. 19. 314, “μνησάμενος δ᾽ ἀδινῶς ἀνενείκατο φώνησεν τε”, where they took it to mean 'cried aloud,' though the meaning is rather 'drew a deep breath' or 'recovered himself.' In 4. 1748 we have the Homeric phrase ἀνενείκατο φώνησεν τε, so that Buttm. is wrong in saying that an accusative is everywhere expressed with this verb by Ap., as there θεοπροπίας is gov. by πεμπάζων.This text is part of:
