[979] εἰκῆ cp. Plat. Gorg. 503e “οὐκ εἰκῆ ἐρεῖ, ἀλλ᾽ ἀποβλέπων πρός τι” (with some definite object in view).
κράτιστον ... ὅπως δύναιτο Cp. Soph. Ant. 666 “ἀλλ᾽ ὂν πόλις στήσειε τοῦδε χρὴ κλύειν”: where χρὴ κλύειν = δικαίως ἂν κλύοι. So here, though ἐστί (not ἦν) must be supplied with κράτιστον, the whole phrase = εἰκῆ κράτιστον ἄν τις ζῴη. Xen. Cyrop. 1.6.19 “τοῦ ... αὐτὸν λέγειν ἃ μὴ σαφῶς εἰδείη φείδεσθαι δεῖ” = ὀρθῶς ἂν φείδοιτο.This text is part of:
