In §§ 265, 266, the orator sums up vigorously the substance of §§ 257—264. Westermann points out that each of the five stages of the life of Aeschines is mentioned in order, when he was (1) a schoolmaster's assistant (§ 258), (2) initiator (§§ 259, 260), (3) scribe (§ 261), (4) actor (§ 262), (5) politician (§§ 263, 264). Many ancientrhetoricians quote these famous antitheses with approval and admiration. We are again shocked by the open avowal of the disgrace of earning an honest living; the ancients were certainly more honest than many of our generation in expressing this.

1. τὰ...βεβιωμένα: passive of ... βεβιώκαμεν (cf. § 130.1).

4. ἐφοίτων, went to school: cf. Ar. Nub. 916, διὰ σὲ δὲ φοιτᾶν οὐδεὶς ἐθέλει τῶν μειρακίων.

5. ἐτελούμην, probably into the Eleusinian mysteries.

6. ἐξέπιπτες: ἐκπίπτειν, exigi, is used as a passive to ἐκβάλλειν; cf. XIX. 337, and Arist. Poet. 17.2, 18.15.
