3. τοσούτοις ὕστερον χρό- νοις: the Peace of Philocrates was sixteen years old at the time of the trial.

5. ὑποκρίνεται, he plays his part: cf. ἐτραγῴδει in § 13.6. The word implies not only pomposity but dissimulation.—κατηγορεῖ...κρίνει: see note on § 14.8.

6. τοῦ ἀγῶνος ὅλου προΐσταται, he puts foremost in (at the head of) his whole suit.

7. οὐδαμοῦ, nowhere, i.e. never: cf. οὗ in § 125.1 with following ἐνταῦθα.—ἐπὶ ταύτην, upon this ground (that of our enmity), keeping the figure of ἀπηντηκὼς ἐμοί, having met me—or with a view to this, i.e. to fight it out (West., Weil, Bl.): cf. ἐνταῦθ᾽ ἀπήντηκας; § 125.5.

8. ἐπιτιμίαν ἀφελέσθαι, i.e. to inflict ἀτιμία, which Ctesiphon would incur as a public debtor if he were unable to pay his fine if convicted.
