2. ἔστω γάρ, well! grant that I have it. Having broken his sentence, he proceeds to say that the hearers have it in their power to neutralize the highest gifts of eloquence by refusing to listen. See XIX. 340, αἱ μὲν τοίνυν ἄλλαι δυνάμεις ἐπιεικῶς εἰσιν αὐτάρκεις, ἡ δὲ τοῦλέγειν, ἂν τὰ παρ᾽ ὑμῶν τῶν ἀκουόντων ἀντιστῇ, διακόπτεται. 4. ὡς ἂν...πρὸς ἕκαστον ἔχητ̓ εὐνοίας, i.e. according to your goodwill towards each, εὐνοίας being partitive with ὡς, as in εἰς τοῦτο εὐνοίας. (G. 1092.) Cf. Thuc. I. 22. 5. οὕτως φρονεῖν, i.e. εὖ or κακῶς φρονεῖν. 6. ἐμπειρία, substituted modestly for the stronger δεινότητα of l. 2, the original construction being resumed by ταύτην (7). 7. ἐξεταζομένην ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν, mar- shalled on your side, the familiar military figure: see notes on § 173.5 and § 173.6. 9. τοὐναντίον (adv.): sc. ἐξεταζομέ- νην εὑρήσετε. 11. κατὰ τούτων (sc. τῷ λέγειν), opposed to ὑπὲρ τῶν ἐχθρῶν. τούτων refers loosely to τις: see § 99.3 and II. 18, εἴ τις...τούτους. We are all familiar with anybody becoming them in conversation. The whole expression εἴ τις ἐλύπησέ τι...κατὰ τούτων (gratifying private grudges) is opposed to οὐδ᾽ ἰδίᾳ (8), as ὑπὲρ τῶν ἐχθρῶν is opposed to ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν (8).
