1. μέτριον: see § 10.7, 8. 2. οὕτω (with εἰπεῖν): he uses μέτριος here modestly, as he is speaking of himself; but he means the man called καλὸς κἀγαθὸς πολίτης in § 278.3 and 306.1 (see Blass). 3, 4. ἐν ταῖς ἐξουσίαις, i.e. ὅτε... ἑλέσθαι παρῆν, 320.1, in time of power. —τὴν...προαίρεσιν, the policy which aims at nobility and pre-eminence; and τῇ πόλει διαφυλάττειν, to guard this always for the state. For τοῦ πρωτείου see § 66.7. 5. πράξει (sc. ἐν πάσῃ) may mean in every act (of the statesman). But Blass is probably right in taking it in the sense of fortune, like εὖ and κακῶς πράττειν: see Aeschyl. Prom. 695, πρᾶξιν Ἰοῦς; Hdt. III. 65 (end), ἀπέκλαιε πᾶσαν τὴν ἑωυτοῦ πρᾶξιν: and Soph. Tr. 294, εὐτυχῆ κλύουσα πρᾶξιν τήνδε. 6. εὔνοιαν, loyal devotion to the state: so in § 322.5.—τούτου, i.e. τὴν εὔνοιαν διαφυλάττειν. 7. ἕτερα, other things, as chance or Fortune, which he cannot control. —ταύτην: i.e. τὴν εὔνοιαν. 8. ἁπλῶς, absolutely, without ex- ception.
