καὶ θανὼν ἀποφθίσειν. As Heracles says of Nessus, “ζῶντά μ᾽ ἔκτεινεν θανών”, Tr. 1163(n.). In Homer the fut. “φθίσω” and the aor. “ἔφθισα” always have “ι_”. The Attic poets use “ἔφθισα” with “ι^” ( Aesch. Eum. 173, Soph. O. T. 202, etc.); this is the only Attic example of the fut. “φθίσω”. (The form “ἀποφθιεῖν”, which Dindorf once read here, has no authority, and is contrary to analogy.) 1028—
