αὐτὸς ἄρχωνἔπλει: the imperf. serves to mark the position which Ajax was holding at the time when he was setting forth. Similarly in Ph. 572πρὸς ποῖον αὖ τόνδ᾽ αὐτὸς οὑδυσσεὺς ἔπλει;” the imperf. refers to the motive which was actuating him. (Cp. “κἀπεμπόμην” in El. 680, and n. in append. there, p. 213.)
