πεδίον … ἄκρον=the furthest part of the plain. Near this part were the “πάγοι” on which the watchers sat (411), and Antigone's tomb was in one of those “πάγοι” (774 n.). Thebes had hills to the N. of it, and stood on a low spur which they throw out southward (117 ff., n.). The “ἄκρον πεδίον”, then, is the plain's northern edge, where it touches the lower slopes of the hills. The ‘furthest’ was thus also the highest part. νηλεές, passive: O. T. 180.
