εἴκειν … κακοῖς, not ‘to succumb’ to them, but to bend before them (as trees before a storm, 713), with a prudent view to self-preservation. Cp. Aesch. PV 320 “σὺ δ᾽ οὐδέπω ταπεινός, οὐδ᾽ εἴκεις κακοῖς, ι πρὸς τοῖς παροῦσι δ᾽ ἄλλα προσλ βεῖν θέλεις”.
